Why Blackjack Is Different From Other Online Games
Most online games are pure chance — the outcome is fixed before you make any decision. Blackjack is different. Your decisions on when to hit, stand, double down, or split directly impact the mathematical outcome. This is why blackjack has one of the lowest house edges of any casino-style game — but only if you play correctly.
What Is Basic Strategy?
Basic strategy is a mathematically optimized set of decisions for every possible hand combination in blackjack. It was developed through statistical analysis of millions of hand simulations. Playing perfect basic strategy reduces the house edge to roughly 0.5% or less, depending on the ruleset.
It doesn't guarantee you win every hand — variance still exists. But over a large number of hands, it's the most efficient way to play.
The Core Decision Framework
Hard Hands (No Ace, or Ace Counted as 1)
- 8 or less: Always hit.
- 9: Double against dealer 3–6; otherwise hit.
- 10: Double against dealer 2–9; hit against 10 or Ace.
- 11: Double against dealer 2–10; hit against Ace.
- 12: Stand against dealer 4–6; hit otherwise.
- 13–16: Stand against dealer 2–6; hit against 7–Ace.
- 17 or more: Always stand.
Soft Hands (Ace Counted as 11)
- Soft 13–14 (A+2, A+3): Double against dealer 5–6; hit otherwise.
- Soft 15–16 (A+4, A+5): Double against dealer 4–6; hit otherwise.
- Soft 17 (A+6): Double against dealer 3–6; hit otherwise.
- Soft 18 (A+7): Double against dealer 3–6; stand against 2, 7, 8; hit against 9, 10, Ace.
- Soft 19–20: Always stand.
Pairs
- Always split: Aces and 8s
- Never split: 10s and 5s
- Split against weak dealer cards (2–6): 2s, 3s, 4s, 6s, 7s, 9s
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Standing on soft 18 against a dealer 9, 10, or Ace — the correct play is to hit.
- Never doubling on 11 — doubling on 11 is one of the most profitable plays in the game.
- Always taking insurance — statistically, insurance is a losing side bet for the player.
- Playing by "feel" — hunches don't improve your mathematical edge; strategy does.
Rule Variations That Affect Strategy
The specific blackjack variant you're playing affects optimal decisions. Key rule differences to check:
- Number of decks: Single-deck games have different optimal plays than 6-deck or 8-deck shoes.
- Dealer hits or stands on soft 17: Dealer standing on soft 17 slightly favors the player.
- Doubling after split allowed: If yes, this changes some splitting decisions.
- Surrender option: Late surrender is valuable in certain situations (e.g., hard 16 vs. dealer 10).
Start With a Strategy Card
Basic strategy charts are freely available and not against any rules. Many beginners keep one open while playing online — this is completely acceptable. Over time, the decisions become second nature. Master this foundation before exploring more advanced concepts like card counting or composition-based strategy.
